It is no secret that I am a lululemon addict. I converted from Nike to lululemon several years ago and have not looked back (I still wear Nike tempo shorts and racerback tops from time to time). Several months ago I was excited to hear that lulu would release a swim/surf line. I bought a pair lulu board shorts last summer and I LOVE THEM! I wear them in and out of the water and they are great.
Me, at Ironman Kona Hawaii last year wearing a lulu sunblocker shirt and board shorts.
Lululemon releases their new products online every Tuesday. On May 1, they released their swim line and I immediately bought a long sleeved rash guard and matching board shorts. I could not wait for them to arrive. Yesterday, a shiny package from lulu arrived! YAY! Sadly, the smile faded to grimace when I took the shirt and shorts out of the bag. Both are PAPER THIN! So thin, that if I walked into a table the wrong way or bumped into a fish in the ocean, it would tear.
The offensively thin board shorts and rash guard. Terribly see through thin.
I could not be more disappointed in the quality. I have worn O’Neil rash guards for years and they are sturdy enough to withstand the test of time. Granted, lulu is not a surf company, BUT the board shorts I bought last year are awesome. I thought the new line would build upon last year. It turns out that after releasing the swimsuits this week the flash colored swim suits (same color as the shorts shown above) had to be recalled immediately because they are so thin that they are see through when wet. Did they not test the product before production?
I really hope that this is not a sign of the future of lululemon but rather a hiccup. They are set to release their sunblocker shirt soon and I have lived in both of mine (the white shown above and the mint green I wore in Big Sur) the past couple of summers. I hope that the quality is the same as the past two summers. Fingers crossed!
I am headed to the store to return the surf outfit for another run or spin outfit that I am sure to love.
