"I have ran and helped plan 2 of these type races (Ragnar, Reach the Beach) for my company. We usually field around 8 teams so everthing that could go wrong has happened to us! Sometimes when they go wrong it just makes it so much more fun!
- Bring food - PB/bread/bananas/apples/powerbars - whatever you will eat. Sometimes finding food or finding enough time to sit down somewhere can be a challenge.
- Bring pillows and blankets!! Sleeping bags and tents are a good idea also. When you hit your 2nd break you don’t want to try to have 6/7 people sleeping in the van.
- I ran mine in New England where cell coverage can by spotty so make sure you give plenty of warning to your next van before a transition. (and have a main contact person so everyone doesn’t have to constantly check thier cells)
- Leapfrog your runners!!!! Especially at night! People get lost - some get VERY lost! And locals get a kick out of changing the sign around or removing them.
- Try to have each runner carry a cell phone and a copy of the map.
- If someone has a car Garmin bring it! My van got lost
iPhones came in handy also.
- Don’t expect the volunteers will always be where they are supposed to be. We showed up to some transitions that had no one there.
- When running pay attention to the little details. I got onto one streach at night that I thought I was lost - no vans, no runners, no signs. Finally I noticed that up ahead on the other side of the road was cones blocking the traffic. My sign telling me to cross the street then turn left was moved to the wrong position.
- Baby wipes and ziploc bags for used clothing. (will say that I didn’t change my cloths after my second leg…)

Bring plenty of snacks, keep your other van informed on your estimated arrival time, and a few weeks out start doing your runs (1 in the am, 1 the same night, 1 the next morning) to get your body used to it. sleep deprivation makes it 10x exhausting.
