Miles DO NOT LIE

An alternative title for this post could be “Thoughts from Today’s Race”.  Last June, I ran my current half PR, 1:45.  At the time, I was training for the Santa Rosa Marathon and a possible BQ (I did not BQ but that is another story).  Today, I was thrilled with a 1:59 half.  While I would have loved to run a 1:45 today, the truth is I have not put in the miles lately and BOY COULD I FEEL IT.  The miles DO NOT LIE.  End of story.  If you do not put in the miles, you cannot expect a stellar result.  RunWithRach said in a post recently (I am paraphrasing here) “If you want a 70% race, do 70% of the mileage”.  Catchthemontherun  posted a few articles on the topic this week.  AndyWg just told me put in the mileage and the speed will come.  I know that all of this is true.  I felt it on the road today.  Cardio wise I was fine but my legs were screaming for most of the race.  I hit a couple sub 8 miles, to make up for the super slow race start (more on that in the race recap) but I felt like I had to work really hard to turn my legs over.  I am thrilled that I ran into PostCollegeRunnerGirl because I am not sure I would have pushed the last few miles without her.

The point is, I have a lot of work to do between now and March 18 (49 days to be exact) to hit a 3:59:59 marathon.  I will head back to the hills this week and eat the miles.  I will commit to swimming once or twice a week while I build mileage (rather than trying to hit three swims).  Spin will remain the same (3-5 classes).

Thank you awesome tumblrs for your support!  I am so glad to be a part of the fitblr community. Go team!

Edit: In a ironic twist of fate, since writing this post I realized I left my Garmin in my friend’s car.  I will likely not get it back for a week. I guess the Universe wants me to run by feel and not by time this week.

Marathon Eve: Tinkerbell Half Edition

First off, thanks to @moremuscles for giving me the opportunity to run tomorrow. You are the best!

I thought about running 10 today but instead I took it easy in the hopes of doing well tomorrow.  We shall see if it paid off.  The race starts at 5:45AM (this means waking up at 3:30AM, friend picking me up at 4AM to head to the Happiest Place on Earth).  My plan is to get a second run in later tomorrow afternoon.

@moxy- There will be A LOT of people in costume.  I could not get it together to wear a great costume but I did buy pink sparkle wings at the expo (they had sparkle wings IN EVERY COLOR!!!!).  I think I am going with pink tights, black/pink tank, pink wings, pink hat.  Not very exciting but it is the best I can do at the present moment.  I will take a pictures tomorrow.

See you on the other side of another 13.1.

Another Tempo Tuesday

Tuesday morning means another hard tempo run.  Thankfully I woke up at 4:45AM without incident and met L for 7 miles.  It was in the 40s this morning (cold for LA) and my body had a hard time warming up.  My calf was not happy.  Kudos to everyone who has to train in the sleet and snow.  My hat is off to you.

One thing is clear from my run this morning, I need to add some additional hill work to my routine.  It is time to go back to the mountain trails.  I have laid off the mountain since tearing my calf in October. My body is craving the hills again.

Up next, a long set in the pool tonight.

Tinkerbell Half Costume Ideas

image

I have been throwing around some costume ideas for the Tinkerbell Half this weekend. It is supposed to be in the 80’s this weekend, although the race starts at 5:45AM so it will probably be perfect running weather.  I have a pair of almost neon pink lululemon crops (paris pink wunder unders for those lulu addicts out there) but what to wear on top?  Should I wear a tutu and wings instead??? What say you tumblrs?  Any suggestions?  Last time I ran the Disney Half in princess ears, pink top, pink skirt.  A little boring.

Mulligan

I request a mulligan for this week.  I had a couple of unscheduled rest days and my pool training as been nil.  It happens.  I am moving on.  The good news is that even though I have not felt that great this week, I have worked out four of seven days.  I was seven for seven last week.  Let’s see what next week brings.

Eleven miles on tap for tomorrow.  I think I may hit the trails.  Sunday easy run and spin (mini brick) then FOOTBALL!  GO PATS!  GO NINERS!

GO JANET GO!

Shalane wins! 49ers win! Patriots win!  There is even more good news from the weekend. A while back I posted about the comeback of Olympic gold medal winner Janet Evans.  Over the weekend, at the AGE OF 40, she qualified for the olympic trials in both the 400 and 800 free.  This woman is just another example that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

You can read more about her inspiring comeback here.

"Cold Execution"

After a weekend of football, I caught up with the Marathon Olympic Trials on DVR yesterday.  I had followed the race live online before heading out for my 16 miler Saturday, but to watch the taped coverage was still thrilling.  I super heart Shalane Flanagan.

One of the guys in my group brought up her running mantra, “cold execution”, while we were out on our 7 miler this morning.  All of us were in awe of her steely resolve throughout the race.  Her body is phenomenal and she has the mental perseverance to match.

Shalane Flanagan, triumphant in her win!

I definitely have a thing or two to learn about “cold execution”.  I am such an emotional person.  It is hard for me to reign it in and put on a poker face.  As I move forward as an athlete, I know that I need to pinpoint that emotional energy and focus it towards the goal.

Workouts so far this week: Sun spin, Mon rest, Tues 7.5 tempo AM.  I am back ending this week with three two a days, running or spin in the AM, swimming in the PM.  Good times ahead!

I can’t believe you had never run with a bottle before! I can’t go without, even for a 3 mile run!

Under 10 miles, I usually run with no water/nutrition. Over 10 miles, I usually wear a water belt. This is the first time in 5 and a half years that I have run with a hand held. :) The last couple of marathons, I used course water/sports drinks but for LA and Big Sur I want to use a hand held.

16 miler to end the week

Whoa!  This week has been interesting.  With the addition of three full swim workouts, I am already feeling like a different person.  My body is definitely working to adapt to this new regime. There was not a time during the week when I was not sore.

The week in numbers: 3 hours spin, 10100 yards swam (4 hours), 20 miles (3 runs) + 16 miler today = 36 miles ran.

I overslept my planned early morning run and am heading out now for 16 miles.  The rest of the day is all about FOOTBALL!!!!  GO 49ers and PATRIOTS!

What are your PRs for the different distances you have raced?

Good question Anon. My half marathon PR is 1:45:41 and marathon PR is 4:17:31, both set last year.

Hey Shan! Mind if I ask you some questions? You don't have to answer if you don't want to and you can answer privately if you prefer. :) I won't be offended either way. (1) Fave tv show? Because you don't seem the type to watch much TV. (2) Best way to spend a rest day? (3) East coast or west coast? (4) Fave treat meal?

Hey Karen. I love questions!  Bring them on. :)  1) In fact, I do watch TV. :)  My fav shows in no particular order: Glee, New Girl, Parenthood, Modern Family, Cougar Town, and Happy Endings.  Clearly I am in a comedy phase. 2) My favorite rest day activity is wine tasting with my husband in Santa Ynez Valley.  3) I’ve lived on both coasts but definitely West Coast. I am a Nor Cal girl who became a So Cal girl.  Although, part of my heart will always be in Boston. GO PATRIOTS!! 4) After a marathon, I love going out to dinner at one of my favorite mexican food restaurants.  Chips, salsa, chicken enchiladas and most importantly, margaritas. :)

Daily Grind

This morning I woke up before 5AM to meet my running peeps.  It had been a while and it was great to see them.  6 miles, 15 sec slower than race pace.  Tonight it is back to the pool for another long set workout, an hour and a half.  I felt amazing after the swim on Tuesday night and I was still flying high in spin yesterday morning.

Happy Thursday Tumblrs!  Almost Friday…
